Welcome to the online hub for LBG's Ideas Lab Digital Health Meets Social Needs!

Here you will find information about the Ideas Lab, some background readings to get you started, and opportunities to start the discussions with your fellow participants as well as the Ideas Lab Mentors. It would be great if you could familiarise yourself with the documents in the Background Reading and Information. In terms of the Ideas Lab itself, you will also find a list of participants and a general outline of how the event will run.

The Ideas Lab is intended to be residential, with all participants staying onsite for the duration of the event. This will allow maximum time for collaboration, including outside of the designated working times. The Ideas Lab will take place at the Hotel Schlosspark Mauerbach (Herzog Friedrich-Platz 1, 3001 Mauerbach,   https://www.schlosspark.at/en-anfahrt   and will begin on the 17th of February, 2019 at 5pm and and last until 5pm on the 22nd of February, 2019. Accommodation will be booked for you in advance of the event; if you have any dietary requirements please let us know. Bring your computer or tablet and dress for creativity, rather than formality.

The Ideas Lab will serve as a catalyst to help researchers from various disciplines generate research proposals within the scope of one of the following two specific research topics.

  • How to support positive health behaviour for cardiovascular disease patients in a sustainable way? (University Hospital Salzburg, affiliated with Prof. Josef Niebauer)
  • How to provide digital solutions in health ecosystems, i.e. patients, families, and providers, to deal with patient-safety issues and health literacy in a patient-centric way? (Medical University of Vienna, affiliated with Prof. Harald Willschke)

For details of the two research challenges and their sub-question, we refer you to the Digital Health Ideas Lab Call document (the link is in the Collections)

The Ideas Lab can be broken down into several stages:

  • Defining the scope of the research topics
  • Identifying common languages and terminologies amongst people from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines
  • Sharing understanding of the research topics involved along with the expertise brought by the participants to the Ideas Lab
  • Taking part in break-out sessions focussing on the challenges, using creative thinking techniques
  • Capturing the output and forming preliminary research concepts
  • Forming research teams consisting of Principal Investigators and Co-Investigators
  • Elaborating and pitching highly innovative research concepts
  • Selecting research concepts using 'real-time' peer review

The Mentoring team for the Ideas Lab that will guide you during the five days as well as select the research concepts will consist of:

  • Ruth Parker, Emory University
  • Christian Werner, Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
  • Paul Dendale, Hasselt University
  • Marc van Kempen, Digital Health Solutions Advisor and Speaker
  • Salomé Azevedo, Catholic University of Portugal
  • Isabella Deuerlein, Institute of Psychodynamic Organization Consulting Munich
  • Christoph Riedl, Northeastern University

From this Ideas Lab, a group of 3-4 Principal Investigators and 1-2 Co-Investigators will be selected for each of the two topics and funded with up to EUR 1.3 million (per year, over a period of seven years). In preparation for the workshop, we would like you to do three things:

  1. Fill in your online profile.
  2. Add to the background reading section. Each of you brings a unique perspective to this challenge. What would you recommend for us all to read? Please add your suggestions to the comments box, at the bottom of the reading list page
  3. Take a moment to learn about your fellow participants.

If you have any questions please donÕt hesitate to get in touch with us through the online hub or on fiete.hofmann@lbg.ac.at. We look forward to seeing you all in at the Ideas Lab Digital Health Meets Social Needs.
