Hood River Meeting
Welcome to the Workshop.
We are delighted that you will be part of the Microbial Systematics for the Next Decade I workshop. In preparation for the workshop, we would like you to do three things:
- Fill in your online profile.
- Add to the background reading section. Each of you brings a unique perspective to this challenge. What would you recommend for us all to read? Please add your suggestions to the comments box, at the bottom of the reading list page
- Take a moment to learn about your fellow participants.

Event description
The workshop brings together 20 participants from the broad fields of microbial systematics, microbial ecology, evolutionary biology, and eukaryotic systematics. The ambitious goal of the workshop is to develop a publication recommending a path forward to deal with the taxonomy and nomenclature of uncultivated microorganisms (mostly metagenome-assembled genomes and single-amplified genomes). In preparation for the workshop in Hood River we will lead a series of 4 hour-long online seminars in October, 2018, during which several recent proposals and issues related to microbial systematics will be presented and discussed with the community.
The seminars, and their related discussions, will provide the framework for the onsite meeting. The Hood River meeting will involve a few presentations, but mostly discussions on key issues/roadblocks and writing working groups. We intend to have a draft of a publication recommending action by the end of the meeting. Participants will arrive on October 28. We will meet on October 29 and October 30 and the morning of October 31, breaking at noon.
Logistics
Travel Information
Please book your flight as soon as possible to get the best rate and best flight. You should plan to fly into Portland International Airport (PDX), arriving on October 28 and departing October 31 in the afternoon. We recommend taking the Max Red Line from the airport to the Gateway Max Station and then taking the Columbia Gorge Express bus to Hood River ($7.50, 75 minutes). The bus drops you off at the Valero gas station, which is a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. Please note the bus schedule. We will work with people to develop alternative plans if necessary.
Stipends
Confirmed participants will need to register as a vendor to UNLV in order to receive the travel stipend. After you create your account, you will receive an email to complete your registration. Choose “Research Participant” as your relationship to NSHE and “Foreign-Individual” or “US-Individual” as your tax classification. US residents will upload a W-9 Form, and non-US residents will upload a W-8 Form. Please do this as soon as possible, but no later than September 30. Call Doug McClement at 702-895-3922 or email supplier.registration@unlv.edu if you need help with the documents. Non-US citizens will need to fill out additional paperwork that will be sent by email. We hope to reimburse participants within six weeks after the workshop.
