• What would you like us to know about you?

  I am a Professor of Mathematics at Yeshiva University in New York. I have been previously affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study, Centre de Recerca Matematica (Barcelona), Northeastern Illinois University, Northwestern University, Loyola University. My main area of expertise is dynamical systems and nonlinear sciences. More specifically, I am interested in analyzing and modeling complex systems (physical, biological, social), as well as understanding their long term behavior. I mostly rely on tools from differential equations, differential geometry, and topology, and often involve numerical experiments. Some of my work has been devoted to applications of dynamical system to biomedical sciences, such as to preventive medicine, population dynamics, modeling of genetic regulatory systems, and modeling of the electrical activity of the heart. I have served as a PI/co-PI/co-I in several NIH funded grants. I have also been funded as a PI by the NSF. One recent multi-disciplinary project I have been working on is devoted to social transmission of health behaviors in a population of young adults. The objective is to develop mathematical /computational models for the social and environmental mechanisms involved in the formation, structure, and time-evolution of health behavior in a community. Our approach, relying on differential equations, agent based modeling, and network science, started with the premise that health behaviors are transmitted among individuals via social channels, in a manner similar to contagions. The spreading of health behaviors in a community can be quantified. The team working on this projects included healthcare professionals, sociologists, economists, statisticians, and mathematicians. We have designed and conducted surveys, analyzed survey data, and designed mathematical models and computer simulations. These models were built with the very specific aim on how to design effective social interventions that positively influence the health behaviors of a large number of individuals.
