I am an Associate Professor of Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). I also serve as Assistant Director for the Carolina Health Informatics Program, a graduate program offering certificates and masters degrees in clinical and public health informatics disciplines (a PhD program is in development). At UNC, I direct the Visual Analytics and Communications Lab which conducts research exploring novel interactive visual analytics techniques and their applications in the healthcare domain and beyond. I have led a wide variety of data visualization and analysis research projects in both academic and industrial research settings, with applications in a range of fields including healthcare, business intelligence, systems management, and intelligence analysis. In that work, I have collaborated closely with domain experts from fields as diverse as biostatistics, computer engineering, design experts, computer scientists, medical doctors, epidemiologists, and more. I have led research activities in health informatics, data analysis and visualization systems, visual analytics, and interactive sensemaking. In this work, I have developed novel methods and systems that help domain experts more quickly, accurately, and intuitively derive insights from large, complex and heterogeneous data sources. Most recently, I have focused on scalable data analysis and visualization methods appled to electronic health data. This includes recent work on high dimensional temporal event analysis, and on progressive visual analytics methods. Before joining UNC, I was at IBM Research where I received two IBM Research Accomplishment Awards. I have also been named a 2015 Data Fellow by the National Consortium of Data Science for my work on visual analytics methods. Finally, I am also a founder of the Visual Analytics in Healthcare Workshop that has been held annually since 2010, and just edited a special issue of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association focused on visual analytics in healthcare.
