I am interested in mathematical models of biological processes; especially those that have applications in the medical field. This is the main reason I am applying to be part of the Ideas Lab, since I find the applications of mathematics to Medicine fascinating. I will start by briefly describing my current research and then stating why; at this point in my academic career being part of a program such as this one is essential to my success as an academic. On the mathematical side, my PhD work focused on the upscaling of discrete to continuous models of cell movement in the presence of stimulus and its applications into infection control on the surface of medical implants. We constructed a cellular automata model (CA) of immune cells and their interaction with bacteria on the surface of an implant. With this model we were able to determine the protein coating for the implant which would help optimize the immune response and prevent infections. Furthermore, we generalized the discrete CA model and upscaled itl into a system of partial differential equations (PDE) where the coefficients of the PDE are given in terms of parameters that can be measured in the lab. Since then, I have worked with both, discrete agent based models and continuous differential equations models of different biological systems. Currently I work on mathematical models of three different biological systems: bone remodeling, sleep and thermoregulations and cell movement in the presence of stimulus. For these very different biological systems I work with different groups of mathematicians, biologist, biomedical engineers and medical doctors specializing on sleep medicine. Participating in the Ideas Lab will allow me to continue using mathematics to model and understand biomedical systems with an interdisciplinary approach.
