I am an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I received BS and MS degrees in engineering mechanics in 1996 and 1999 respectively from Tsinghua University, China. I received Ph.D. in engineering science and mechanics in 2004 from Virginia Tech. I worked as a postdoctoral research associate in biomedical engineering at Duke University in 2005-2007. I joined the biomedical engineering department at University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2007 and have become associate professor since 2013.
The focus of my research is on patient monitoring, where continuous/repeated measurements are conducted for patient physiological functions and/or life support equipment to improve patient management. My research objective is to develop intelligent methods to improve the quality of patient monitoring by advancing and integrating techniques in signal processing, machine learning, control, and mathematical modeling. My lab has developed award-winning techniques for intelligent patient monitoring based on critical physiological parameters such as ECG, blood pressure, respiration, EEG, etc. We have established databases of scalp EEG records, which contain EEG records for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairments, and traumatic brain injury, as well as their normal control counterparts. We are currently establishing an ECG data, which contain thousands of ECG records of patients from US, China, and, Brazil.
