I am currently assistant professor of social epidemiology in the UTHealth School of Public Health's Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences. I received a doctorate in Environmental and Ecological Anthropology from the University of Georgia, and much of my research is on human behavior and wellbeing in extreme circumstances like disasters, warfare, and migration--and particularly the influence of social relations, social networks, and when people find a way to work together. I help develop social network analysis software for the company Medical Decision Logic, Inc. and have applied social network analysis to the following fields: post-disaster mental health and social support, disaster recovery coordination, primary care, drug and violence prevention coalitions, and public understanding of science. Most of my research takes place in Mexico, Ecuador, and the United States.
