I am a professor and marine fisheries ecologist at Oregon State University. I am currently the Head of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, one of the top-ranked conservation science programs in the U.S.. I devote most of my limited research time to some of the oldest and slowest-growing animals in the sea: sea turtles, sharks, sturgeon, and U.S. west coast rockfish. I primarily use computer models and simulations to help us understand how populations respond to human and environmental impacts and to guide research and management policy towards their recovery. Currently, I am working on citizen science programs and other engagement activities to broaden participation in science. I love to share my experiences while learning from community members and stakeholders. I also regularly serve as an advisor to the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on protected species science and ecosystem approaches to fisheries management.
