Michael K. Orbach is Professor Emeritus of Marine Affairs and Policy in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, a Research Professor in the Institute for Marine Sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz, an Affiliated Researcher with the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University, and a Senior Fellow with the Center for the Blue Economy, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He was a formal advisor to both the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Ocean Commission, has served on the Ocean Studies Board -- and is a National Associate -- of the National Research Council. He has held numerous other appointments to Boards and Commissions both public and private, including as a Governor-appointed member of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission and Chair of the North Carolina Marine Science Council, and member of the Boards of Directors of the Ocean Conservancy and the Surfrider Foundation. He is currently the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Offshore Science and Assessment of the U.S. National Academy of Science.
